Time is Life
Time Management is Life Management
Today I’m going to take a slight detour, and talk a bit about time management. I know. I know! This blog is for Internet marketing, SEO, and marketing in generaly (and more), but time is important no matter what we do!
This post was inspired by an event that transpired earlier today. I was walking past a woman downtown in Victoria, when I heard her say: “I have a lot of time.” I don’t know the exact context of this woman’s statement; however, I can’t help but feel some sympathy for her. We all treat our time as if we have ample amounts of it. In some respects we do. But in reality, life is but one present moment passing into another, and then another, and another.
We all know what it feels like for life to pass by, because that is just what happens (when we aren’t paying attention). But I maintain that any of us, Internet marketers, lawyers, chefs, plumbers, counsellors, etc., should cherish our time as the most precious resource we have. I know we have all heard this sentiment echoed time and time again (get it?). But how many of us actually live by it? How many moments do you let just slip by unnoticed? What made those moments so unprecious?
Considering the implications of this on our personal lives means that we resolve to work more effectively, so that we may live more effectively (also)! Allow me to share with you just a few of the most powerful practices in time management that have helped me to be as productive as I am … not that I have it perfect! But I am always getting better and better with my time!
1. Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve with your life. This is also known as … goal setting! LOL! Setting clear goals and having a clear vision for what you want to have and achieve keeps close to heart the “whys” of your life. We all need to know, and not just remember, why we are doing what we are doing. We can explain it to people time and time again, but until we just feel all of our reasons effortlessly, then we need to do some mental work here. Why are you doing what you are doing? (And how are you keeping it close to heart – always)?
2. Work in chunks. This applies to our lives in a few respects. First of all, this means taking some time off.
Now, if you are anything like me then you probably wish that you could just work all of the time! Sometimes meals even feel like too much of a diversion. And I LOVE to eat! Time off needs to occur after intense work sessions daily and weekly (to stay focused).
3. Make your work more systematic. I don’t care what system you use to keep yourself on track. Just do it! Systematizing the mechanics of your life is a way of adding structure without rigidly binding the direction that you take. It’s brilliant, and necessary for success!
